Residence Life

Your  room for the next 8 months

What is living in residence like at Lakeland College? Well for one thing, you’re living in a building where there are fifty to sixty other students being housed. These people that are located within the same building are from all over Canada and are in all different kinds of courses. When you move to Lakeland in the fall, you probably do not know anyone living in the same dorm as you. You have to share a tiny, “shoe box” of a bedroom with another person you do not know. Now, if sharing a bedroom with a stranger is not enough, than having to share a bathroom and a kitchen with other students should top it off.
Your "laboratory" room, learning to cook without your mom

Depending on who is reading this blog, you are probably going to be laughing or going to be scared. If you’re a new student trying to decide if you want to live in residence, you are probably thinking “No way am I living in that”. Well, coming from us, who have lived on residence, don’t panic yet. These are the nicest dorms we have experienced in all of Western Canada.  When you first get on campus in September, it is going to be a little frightening. You do not know anybody living with you, you have to share a kitchen with every single student located in that dorm, and for the first time in your life you are living away from your parents. You have to do your own laundry, cook your own food, and even clean your own room. My dad’s exact lines to me when he dropped me off my first day was “calm down, you look like a deer caught in the headlights”. As horrible as that sounds, this is going to be the time of your life.

Everyone when they come to school has high hopes of forgetting their high school nightmare and making their college experience become a lifelong dream. That dream, will probably come true. Living in a dorm gives you the first chance to meet lots of people that are first years too. They don’t know anybody, and everyone is looking for friends. You will become friends with everybody, and you will do everything together. You’ll cook, go to class, hang out, and most of all, party together. At one point in time, you will probably make a complete fool of yourself in front of them. But do not worry; they will do the same thing. It literally is like leaving one, small family with your old parents and annoying siblings at home and entering one giant family where everyone is your age.

Coming from someone that is entering their third year of college at Lakeland, do not miss out on the dorm experience. You will meet lifelong friends, do some of the craziest things you’ll ever do, probably party a little more than recommended, and in the process learn more than you ever imagined. Therefore, even though the rooms feel like the size of a jail cell, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because you will meet the best friends you’ll probably ever have and have experiences and memories that will last you a lifetime.
