Harvest is well under way at the Student Managed Farm with 560 acres of wheat, barley, peas, flax, the pea/canola intercrop all harvested, and the canola's almost done. According to Amy, second year Crop Technology student, operations manager of the farm, and our resident harvest expert, the canola is already swathed and will be completed shortly after Thanksgiving.
Like the student managed farm itself, harvest is run by the students at Lakeland College. Crop Technology students provide all of the labour for the farm during their two year stay under the tutelage of the college staff. Work usually starts sometime after classes in the afternoon and carries on until the crops start to get too tough in the evening. The second year 'croppers' are taught how to run the equipment. As some students are new to operating the first 140 acres took almost a week to complete. The students have access to a New Holland 960 combine, a Westward 9200 swather, both with 25 foot headers, and a 3 ton Chevrolet grain truck that is used to haul the grains back to the farms bins, which can hold approximately 34,000 bushels of grain.
